All tanzanite on earth comes from the Merelani Hills near Mount Kilimanjaro, a mining area of roughly twenty square kilometres. Nothing comparable has been found anywhere else since 1967.
The deposit is worked at increasing depth and the good blue rough is getting scarcer each season. Fine large stones are already traded the way estate pieces are.
Tanzanite is strongly pleochroic: the crystal absorbs light differently along its three axes, so the same stone can show blue, violet and, before heating, a brownish red depending on the direction it is viewed from.
Every stone is examined and graded in house before it reaches the shop.
Certification from a recognised laboratory is available on request for any stone.
